Since its inception in 2018, the Shaw Road Ceramics studio and shop can be found nestled amongst the peaceful apple orchards of Oratia, West Auckland, Aotearoa. Although ceramicist and sculptor Melissa Hastings had her roots firmly planted in film and theatre design, she went on to follow a passion for the environmental arts after moving out to the west coast of Tāmaki Makaurau. Melissa led and collaborated in many environmental art projects in local schools, which led on to mentoring the amazing rangatahi of Kākano Youth Arts Collective.

Shed 27 became a perfect setting for Melissa to refine this love for the environment that features often in her exhibition pieces and collections. The functional stoneware pieces are often portrayed in soft tones with a nod to the modernist era. This can been seen even more emphatically in her architectural series of sculptural vessels.

Melissa Hastings

‘The medium of ceramics was the perfect place for me to land at this time in my life. I believe there is no better material than clay to demonstrate fragility and strength in equal measure, which epitomises everything I seek to reflect and create in my own artistic practice’

Studio shop

Since becoming full time in my beautiful studio in Oratia, West Auckland I have had the pleasure of opening my studio to the public. In my mind ceramic objects are so tactile. Visiting the studio enables the viewer to hold the vessel experiencing the true weight, texture and scale. The studio shop is also a great place to discuss commissions or put together the perfect gift box. Please contact me here to make an appointment or be kept up to date with opening times and upcoming exhibitions or alternatively follow me @shawroadceramics .
